Book 2: Post 1 Leo Lu

The second book that I chose to read was Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness by Rick Hanson. I typically am skeptical of "self-help" books and will normally overlook them. However, I decided to give it a chance after its promise of offering evidence based on neuroscience to explain how these techniques can actually change our brain chemistry.

The book offers tools to build resilience and face fears in the face of daily stress and life's inevitable challenges. From the introduction, I hoped to learn how to deal with the downs of daily life—not just for myself, but to be my best for others as well. I’m looking for techniques that I can actually apply during difficult times and habits to help maintain resilience when life gets tough.

The Compassion chapter emphasizes that we are often better at supporting others through their struggles than we are at doing the same for ourselves, which is something that I felt I could strongly relate to. Cultivating empathy for our own difficulties can be the first step toward overcoming them. I appreciate how Dr. Hanson integrates neuroscience studies throughout the book, as this objective approach makes the techniques feel more credible than typical self-help advice based solely on emotions or abstract benefits.

Overall, I have been finding this book valuable and plan to revisit some of the suggested techniques in the future.
