Book 2 Post 2 Leo Lu

Although I am still reading Resilient, it has already presented me valuable insights and practical skills. I have always been skeptical of self-help books because they often offer vague, feel-good advice that stems from emotion without much depth. However, I'm glad I gave this one a chance, as Resilient has completely changed my view of the genre.

Some chapters have made me realize how much I operate without thinking in depth, rushing from task to task between school, work, and personal responsibilities. This mindset takes the meaning out of life, as it does not allow one to be present and mindful of what is actually occurring.

The Grit chapter felt relatable because it tackled my struggle with feeling overwhelmed when challenges pile up. Rather than falling into learned helplessness, I’ve begun finding different ways to take action, which has helped raise my productivity and lowered stress levels. This shift has already helped me tackle academic and personal challenges more effectively.

While the book has been mostly positive, there were moments that challenged my mindset. I found myself resistant to the idea of showing too much compassion to myself, likely because I'm used to holding myself to very high standards. The book also forced me to confront uncomfortable truths and memories I had been avoiding. However, these moments of discomfort turned out to be more productive than harmful.

I highly recommend this book, especially to those about to start full-time jobs. It’s better to develop these resilience tools now, before the demands of a career take over. Even if you only have time to skim through, the insights and practical techniques are definitely worth it, as long as you are ready to seriously reconsider certain aspects of life.

  1. Hi Leo, I can definitely relate to your perspective of this genre of books, well although there's times in which great advice is offered, many times I feel like it's repetitive. It's great to hear that Resilient has helped you however develop a more mindful approach to life. I'm inspired to pick up this book myself!

  2. Leo, as someone who’s always seeking personal growth but is equally skeptical of 'self-help' books, I really enjoyed reading your takeaways from this book. Your reflections on the chapter about Grit were particularly relatable, and the rest of your review has piqued my curiosity. I feel inspired to challenge my own mindset and explore this book for myself—thank you for sharing!
